Yoga: Submitted by Sharon Velt - Toorak, Melb Vic.
The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit language used in India which translates to 'union' or 'yoke'. Not just an excersise program Yoga it envolves the mind, body and spirit with it's philosophy of matter, people, animals, plants, thoughts, ideas and in fact everything being a part of a single great whole. Although it is not a religion, so relax there's no preaching!
The practice of Yoga is designed to on a mental level clear and calm the mind via meditation and breathing techniques. The breathing techniques help to enable clear and focused thinking through increased oxygen supply to the body. Meditation is at the heart of Yoga and is a process of stilling and relaxing the mind.
On a physical level Yoga involves a range of exercises containing mostly slow and controlled movements with a focus of joining mind and motion.
Yoga is a very intergrated approach to improving mental and physical wellbeing that can have many benefits.
The benefits of Yoga have been used to alleviate many concerns although it is most widely recognised for it's ability to reduce stress and assist with general wellbeing. Another benefit is of being a low impact excersise suitable for many.
